This shows the sphere component of a Photo Portal -- the whole thing can be experienced here: https://link.wholereality.net/W250909 Click on the photo that appears in order to enter the panorama. Click again in the same region of the panorama to go back to the photo.
"Photo Portal" is what I call combinations of photography and 360 panoramas in which the photograph was taken at the same nodal point, but possibly with different photographic parameters such as focal length, depth of field, exposure, and so on. It may also be processed differently.
The result is a picture that, because of its nodal point alignment, is clearly taken in the same place as the panorama, and clearly is of a specific element in the panorama. However, it may look much different, highlighting different aspects of the object in ways typically used in photographic art.
The comparison of these two images (which the URL above allows) is interesting and illustrative of many artistic, cognitive, and even philosophical topics. Plus, they are a very fun and interesting challenge to make.
Why did I take this panorama here? It was specifically to try making a Photo Portal that involved a path, because I wanted to see how it worked out, and I had taken a nice photograph similar to this in the past. This was a step in learning, rather than illustrating something else or just creating something beautiful. Although I do think this was a lovely location. :)
