When the rain storms come the upland forests are flushed of dead and weakened trees and shrubs. They are carried down the river and out to the Pacific Ocean. The storm surges and tides throw them back to land onto the gravel banks that line this coast line. There they are bleached like old bones and if not picked up for firewood lead a storm tossed existence between the sea and the gravel bank.

This gravel bank is one side of an ancient slaughter yard. At 150 acres one of the largest indigenous slaughter yards on the planet. It was here that groups of early Maori would gather and process the carcases of the now extinct giant Moa bird.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moa)

The shells on the nadir are of our native abalone called Paua. The empty shells were picked up just around about here on the gravel bank. Ripped from their underwater rocky home, tossed high by tide and storm and left to lie empty in the bleaching sun.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paua)
