You are standing in front of the "Schaustollen" (tunnel exhibit) at the twin town of Sulzbach-Rosenberg, one of the reminders of a time when Rosenberg was known around the world for its steel and rails. With iron ore not being a renewable resource, the mine was closed down in 1974. The steel mill struggled on and finally “died” in September 2002.
The steel mill and the mine dominated the region for more than a century, so it’s no surprise there are local societies dedicated to preserving the memory of this cultural heritage, and that is how this tiny open-air museum came to be.
From left to right:
- this rusty gondola once was used to transport the ore on a ropeway across the town to the steel mill.
- Example of a mine entrance and support structure
- cross-section with mine train
- door in the background: entrance to the tunnel itself
