A Selfmade Forest

The small forest in my panorama, called "Buchenwäldchen" (little beech forest) is a very special one, as it is a selfmade-forest. No one planed it, no one planted it, it grew on its on. And that is quite unusual in this more or less 100% man-made environment. It is located in the city of Essen in the center of the "Ruhrgebiet."

The Ruhrgebiet is (better:was) a densely populated industrial region once famous for its coal mines and the Kruppwerke, Thyssen and so on. Beside its factories and coal mines the Ruhrgebiet still has had a lot of agricultural used parts.

For several decades Buchenwäldchen was visited by ramblers with and without dogs (like me, see the 2007 Sustenance event). And for the last years also some teenager found out, that this little forest was ideal for BMX. They built their own small tracks with little jumps and short downhill parts.

Everybody was lucky here in the forest until the week before I took the panorama. At that time some "official vandals" with order from the urban administration destroyed the tracks and jumps, cut and laid them over the paths and planted holly on the ways to stop everyone from walking through "Buchenwäldchen."
