Dickens is a small town in the High Plains region of west Texas and is the county seat of Dickens County, Texas. The current population in 2025 is 204 which is down from 219 in the 2020 census and down more from 286 in the 2010 census. The historical census records show 302 in 1960 and 465 in 1940.
Several factors contribute to this decline in population. The agricultural and petroleum industries have seen a decline in employment opportunities resulting in out-migration of young people. Modern farming practices and machinery have consolidated small farms into large corporate operations reducing the need for laborers. Larger urban areas offer higher paying jobs than the limited local economies of rural towns.
The courthouse shown in the panorama was built in 1910 and was constructed of red brick and limestone and features a clock tower and a domed roof.
