Why and Because. A Fable.

When Why and Because met they befriended almost instantly. Why loved to ask questions in an unstoppable and almost childlike way, and Because to answer to anything — with now and then an annoying self indulgent I-know-it-all air to himself, though. The mild weather, the beautiful scenery, the chirpy-chip bird hubbub in the parfumed atmosphere around them, all seemed to converge towards an inevitable crush at first sight. And a big one it was!

The first answers of Because were colourful tales inhabited by a plentiful company of powerful and vivid characters -human or not, but all of them full with love, lust, anger, pride and an incredible cruelty depending on the moment- that loved or fought each other endlessly as their stories tangled up in a dizzying way. Why was sometimes surprised at how these entertaining narratives changed depending on the location and the moment in which they were proposed, but did not make any remarks about it. At first.

When he finally exposed these objections to his friend, Because, in a slightly irritated tone, cut short his storytelling and started delivering consistently a massive collection of abstruse, vague and elaborated musings to his colleague, instead of the previous merry pandemonium. To which Why responded with his accustomed and contagious enthusiasm... for a while.

This time Because took a circumspected and cold look, changed his favourite crimson, purple and black attire for a sober and blinding white one, put on the ugliest glasses on the market, and, surrounded by the most extraordinarily expensive and baroque array of gadgets and devices that humankind has ever seen -which he applied on all kinds of mineral, vegetal, and animal stuff- he started croaking (he, who had sung so beautifully!!!) the dry and uncannily precise containing of thousands and thousands of papers, full with observational facts and quantitative data that -thank you- have saved humankind (the rich one, at least) from famine, cold, disease, etc, providing it along the way with modern delicacies such as nuclear bombs, dirt à gogo on a planetary scale, a less boring because more variegated weather and social media, among others.

Was it the sheer mass of information and disinformation, globalization, progressive depauperation of the many in favour of the few in so many parts of the globe, or who knows what, the fact is that something had affected Because. Disenchantment and fatigue had taken by storm his spirits and he was delivering a messy mixture of sermons, data and mild self-help metaphysics over a background of K-pop, reggaeton and electronic music. His garment turned colour from black to red, to white, to green, purple, crimson, violet, or all of them at once in  a blinding rainbow. He even started repeating his first stories word for word, for days on end.

And when eventually, with an anxious look of unbelievability in his eyes Why asked why? to his former friend, Because turned round slowly to him and answered treacherously, with a slightly cynical tone and an infinite lassitude in his voice:

And why not ?

About this panorama.

My pic shows the apse of San Sebastian's Catedral del Buen Pastor in full sunlight (showing large dark areas) after the restoration of its façades. Fully in the shade, the KM cultural center, that is actually being renewed.

I intended to show two different kinds of 'Because' confronted.

Not a great shot, but...
