The Abbey Ruins
In 1935 William Lyon Mackenzie King built Abbey Ruins from stone remnants of buildings that were destroyed or demolished. Abbey Ruins has stones from the ruins of the Centre Block of Canada’s first Parliament Buildings destroyed by fire in 1916. The mantel from the House of Commons that survived the fire. The bay window from the Batson House and a wall and door assembly from Batson House demolished in 1935.
Mackenzie King was Prime Minister of Canada for 21 years during the period 1921 to 1948. From 1903 to 1950 he added English and French gardens, trails and the Abbey Ruins to the estate. King left the 231 hectare estate to the people of Canada ensuring continuity of King's idea of preserving Canadian history and culture from the early 20th century for future generations.
