St. Andrews / Greensted Church
Greensted Church in Essex has the distinction of being the oldest wooden church in the world. The original nave is largely intact and is made of large split oak tree trunks. Dendrochronological evidence puts the date as around 1060. Of course, what we see now is the result of substantial additions, repairs and reconstruction work carried out in the intervening centuries. (The two people in the churchyard are engaged in documenting gravestones and other artifacts - part of an exercise covering all the churches in Essex). Being the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, the morning mist was slow to clear and the sun was only just begining to make its presence felt!
