Abandoned Cafe in Crete

The village of Paleochora lies on the southern coast of Crete. Paleochora is beautiful and relatively unspoilt (in the modern sense), but it has had an extremely turbulent past...

It is built on the ruins of the ancient city of Kalamydi. Below the village of today lie ruins of a fort originally buily in 1278, destroyed in 1332 and rebuilt in 1334, destroyed again (by the pirate Barbarossa) in 1539, rebuilt again in 1595, and modified by Turk invaders in 1645. At some point in the following 200 years it was almost entirely destroyed, then finally reinhabited once more in 1866. Walls and foundations of the fort remain at the top of the hill at the southern end of the village.

But that's not actually where this panorama was shot. This is a small cafe built in the side of the hill leading up to those ancient ruins, clearly once used but since abandoned – another victim of the much more recent economic disasters that have hit Greece so hard. It's boarded up but some windows are broken. Although it's not possible to get inside (not without climbing through broken windows) I was able to reach through and set up the tripod to take this panorama.
