Mummy Cave Ruin is the largest preserved village in Canyon de Chelly National Monument. Construction at the village began around 1060 A. D. and was last occupied around 1300 A. D. It consists of approximately 70 rooms and is located 300 feet above the canyon floor in an area where the sandstone cliff walls rise to over 700 feet. Various American Indian groups have lived in the canyon for nearly 5000 years making it one of the longest continuously inhabited areas in North America.
