The area south of the castle of Nevşehir was inhabited mainly by (Greek orthodox) Christians until 1923 and the people exchange between Turkey and Greece. Later many Turks moved into the abandoned houses, changed them, built new ones, destroyed some etc. Some years ago the government had decided to renew the whole area and made the people move away in 2012 and 2013. About 400 buildings had been declared as of historic interest but meanwhile nearly all of them are pulled down. This was done despite the knowledge that the big volcanic rock contains an underground city with several floors. Now the building works stopped, because it is uncertain that the hollowed rock can carry the new houses.
