This odd group of sculptures, inspired by Sir Walter Scott's 1816 novel "Old Mortality", has stood at the entrance to Philadelphia's historic Laurel Hill Cemetery since 1836. It depicts Scott (at left) contemplating Old Mortality (sitting on coffin) and his pony. The white bust on the column is a self portrait of the artist, James Thom.
