This is Hoy Sound, it is the western entrance to the sheltered harbour of Scapa Flow.

In bad weather and rough seas many ships have missed the entrance and foundered on the rocks just a few miles from safety.

There is a Kirkyard down near the shore where many unlucky sailors are buried.
