Fala is the oldest power plant built on the Drava river. Construction commenced in 1913. World War I, however, slowed down the works. Nevertheless, the first units were commissioned already in May 1918. Due to increased power demand, two additional units were built in 1925 and 1931.

In the old machine house, seven generating units were in operation until 1990. These units comprised horizontal double Francis turbines and in the extension on the same shaft the generators. When the new machine house was built on the right bank, these old units were gradually shut down. The old machine house forms a part of the dam structure and is going to be turned into a technical museum.
