Storm Energy

On Wednesday, September 21st 2005, high winds and possibly 2 tornados went though the northern suburbs of Minneapolis and St. Paul in Minnesota. More than 200,000 homes were initially without power; that number was down to less than 13,000 by Sunday evening, and should be about 5,000 after Monday. Up to 8 inches of rain fell in some places. Winds, which reached nearly 70 MPH(113 KM/H), toppled countless numbers of trees across the northern suburbs. In some places every other tree was a victim to the energy released by the storm.

I have read that the average thunderstorm releases the energy equivalent of a 20 kiloton nuclear weapon, I imagine this one was several times that strong. The difference between the storm and the nuclear weapon is the speed of the energy release.

Now we will have to see how long it take to get the energy turned back on... I couldn't find one place that looked good, so I did a half panorama, and made a collage of other pictures.
