Lighting the darkness drives away irrational fears formed in childhood and makes us feel safe and in control of our environment. Light is a symbol of our civilisation but we may have to switch on a little less and learn to live with the shadows.
Here at Hastings on the south coast of England, at the end of a clear Autumn day, the amusement arcades and other attractions blaze with artificial brilliance drawing visitors and other pleasure seekers. The town is now a large urban sprawl with many social problems and a legacy of government neglect, but The Old Town still retains its charm and the fish n chips are some of the best in England.
