During the 1960s through the 1980s, the construction of the Vine Street Expressway demolished hundreds of homes and businesses and bisected Chinatown.
The Western portion of Chinatown was demolished for construction of the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
The History of Chinatown mural was commissioned for the 125th anniversary of Chinatown in the mid-1990s. It depicts the struggles the Chinese community endured since the 1870s. Ironically, the mural itself will soon be covered by a new building in front of it. A re-interpretation of the mural will be created a block away on 9th Street.
The Crane Community Center building, the newest building in the panorama, is a residential/retail/community center that was completed in 2019.
Small personal history: My wife's family owned a Chinese grocery/traditional pharmacy/knick-knack store on 10th Street from the 1970s to 2000s. In the panorama it was located in the first red-brick building to the left of the corner of Winter and 10th Streets.
