Old and the New Lights at Cape Spear
The Cape Spear area has been designated a Canadian National Historic Site. Naturally, the cape has hosted many lighthouses; the first from 1836. Now restored to circa 1939, this lighthouse is now open for public viewing. The concrete lighthouse, also visible in this scene, was built in 1955 as its replacement. A natural evolution from the original where the light was operated and maintained by a lighthouse keeper, to an unmanned light with an automatic sounding fog horn that is triggered by a light sensing switch. Another natural evolution is the addition of tourist washrooms, a café and art exhibit buildings.
