A New Museum

For what I know, the Polycentric Museum of Aigai  (Πολυκεντρικό Μουσείο Αιγών in Greek)  must be the newest Museum in Greece. It was officially inaugurated on the 22nd December of last year, 2022. The Museum is supposed to be the opening gate before visiting the rest of museums and archeological sites in Vergina (ancient Aegae). Some of these include the impressive Museum of the Royal Tombs, where the tombs of Phillip II (father to Alexander the Great) and of Alexander IV (son of Alexander the Great), along with other funeral monuments and their rich offerings, are on display.

The Polycentric Museum is also new in the way it shows its rich containing, forming vast compositions of elements instead of showing them individually or isolated in small groups, as most museums usually do. But what impressed me the most, and I suppose that I am not the only one, was the reconstruction of the center upper level of the palace of Aegae that I show in this panorama. It is so awesome, specially when you realize the scant remains of the palacethat have survived on the site of the actual palace (now in restoration, it can't be visited, as the palace of Pella, where Alexander the Great was born).

An deep sense of loss fills the visitor.

(The remains of the theatre where Phillip the II was killed, which lays below the palace of Aigai, may be visited though).
