The Flora footbridge named after former Canadian politician Flora MacDonald. Canada's first female foreign minister.
The new bridge will reduce commuting distances between two mid-town Ottawa communities, 5th Avenue in the Glebe with Clegg Street in Old Ottawa East. The bridge and will improve access for users of the extensive network of pedestrian multi-use pathways in Ottawa Ontario and Gatineau Quebec.
The Flora Footbridge is a 5 metre wide by 123 metre long, linear multi-use pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the over the Rideau Canal a World Heritage Site.
Officially opened for use on Friday, June 28, 2019
The bridge has an elliptically shaped lookout area at the west abutment.
Two new art installations will be featured.
A bench by Algonquin artist Claude Latours named Mōnz (Moose) will be located on the west side of the canal in the wetlands area facing the lily pond.
A bench by Sally Lee Sheeks called Alone will be located on the east side at the foot of the staircase ramp.
