The original High Bridge was built in 1889, In 1904 it was partially destroyed by a tornado and required major rebuilding. In 1977 serious structural deficiencies were found but weight restrictions kept it operating until 1984 when it was closed. it was rebuilt in 1985, and closed in in 2017 for redecking and then reopened in 2018. The ornamental iron work on the new bridge was built using iron from the original bridge. The High Bridge has over a century long history of suicides, and with the redecking in 2018 9’ tall suicide prevention barriers were finally added to the bridge.
