New Canna Blooms Part 1

About 3 years ago, Jean our family relative gave a few Canna roots. These plantings took about 1 square foot (30 x 30 centimeters) of garden space. These plants rhizomes (roots) grow and expand under the ground. Today this small plant has grown to an area 10 x 3 feet (3.5 x 1 meters). In January the dead leaves were cut off at the ground level. With a little bit of help of Miracle Grow fertilizer and generous Spring rains, they have grown to about 8 feet (2.6 meters) high. "New" blooms appear about every four days. We grow them for the lush green leaves and large bright yellow blooms.

Internationally, cannas are one of the most popular garden plants and a large horticultural industry depends on the plant.

The rhizomes of cannas are rich in starch, and it has many uses in agriculture. All of the plant has commercial value, rhizomes for starch (consumption by humans and livestock), stems and foliage for animal fodder, young shoots as a vegetable, and young seeds as an addition to tortillas.

The seeds are used as beads in jewelry.

The seeds are used as the mobile elements of the kayamb, a musical instrument from Réunion, as well as the hosho, a gourd rattle from Zimbabwe, where the seeds are known as hota seeds.
