Hospitalhof Stuttgart

The Hospitalhof in Stuttgart is the center for „Education, Culture and Spirituality“ of the Protestant Church of Württemberg. Stuttgart is the capital of the state of Baden-Württemberg.

From 1471 to 1493 the Hospitalkirche (Hospital Church) was built for the order of the Domenicans. In the year 1944, during World War II, the church was destroyed by bombs and only the choir and the tower were reconstructed. The nave remained a ruin serving as a war memorial.

After many different uses in history, in 1960, the Old Hospitalhof was built, which, in 2014, was replaced by the New Hospitalhof. This is an impressive building with a great hall (Paul-Lechler-Saal) and several rooms for meetings and seminars. Here you can enjoy the hospitality and inspiration of the Protestant Church of Württemberg.

The Panorama was taken (inside the ruins of the nave) during the 35th Protestant German Church Festival (Deutscher Evangelischer Kirchentag). Every other year this festival attracts round about 100.000 people. In 2015, the festival took place in Stuttgart from the 3rd to the 7th of June. The festival’s motto was “That we may become wise” (taken from Psalm 90). In the King James version the verse reads: “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”

Usually I attend these festivals joining the Church Brass Bands. During these festivals there are usually several thousand brass band players around, playing in churches, in public places, in hospitals, nursing homes, public services, at concerts, workshops, etc. Since for this purpose I had to travel with my musical scores, music stand and my Shepherd's crook cornet, I did not have much more capacity for carrying heavy photographical equipment also. I therefore decided to test my new light travelling philopod equipment. The festival was the first use of this equipment “in the field” – rather new to me.
