Mountain Road Works

In June I was travelling is this part of County Donegal. Three times I passed through these road works, on this remote mountain pass. Always there were a lot of orange traffic cones with hazard tape and signs saying "DANGER. MEN at WORK". Sometimes the gravel seemed to have moved about a little, but I never actually found anyone working there!

The cars shown in this panorama would count as the "rush hour" on this road. Most of the times I passed through I was alone on the road - and of course in this case their apparent adjacency is an artefact resulting from the time taken to shoot the source images.

Glengesh pass leads off the SW peninsula of County Donegal. To its North are the caves of Maghera, on a cliff-backed wide sandy beach, and then the town of Ardara set in a fairly flat but rugged coastal region, with the Kilclooney Dolmen and many sandy beaches along the coast, such as at Rosbeg and Portnoo.

To the South and West of Glengesh are the Glencolmcille valley, Slieve League mountain, with its Sea Cliffs, Muckross Head with the ancient tombs in the Shalwy Valley and the villages of Carrick, and Kilcar.

Equipment: The source images were taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mk II, Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye lens.

The camera was mounted on a Kaiden Kiwi panorama adapter on a Manfrotto 190XDB tripod.

Horizontal photographs were taken at 60° angles and also two ground shots and a sky shot. Each "shot" consisted of three bracketed exposures from +2 to -2 stops.

A total of 27 separate images were combined using Hugin (which in turn invokes Nona, Enfuse and Enblend) in order to achieve this High Dynamic Range type result and to accommodate the moving vehicles.
