Leonardo's Machines - Mechanical Loom

Reading the current theme, this time the choice has been very very easy for me. Working in Milan I thought at once to Leonardo's machines, so I went to the National Science and Techonology Museum "Leonardo da Vinci" and took a pano in Leonardo's gallery. There are many machines made on his projects: in first plane you may see the first mechanical loom ever conceived, as you can read on the panel at the base of the machine. Here is copied the whole text:

"Leonardo's drawing represents the first mechanical loom ever conceived. In fact, this machine is one of the most complex drawn by Leonardo. Here the warp is equipped with an automatic system of dragging, connected to the heddles and to the shuttle that is automatically thrust. All the actions and movements necessary for forming the fabric are provided by a single shaft, which can be moved by hand by one person by means of a crank. Leonardo represented a solution to the problem of unrolling the warp and wrapping the finished fabric, maintaining the necessary tautness on the threads and the cloth, and introduced the shuttle that was mechanically thrust by means of a leaf spring system, which would actually appear in use only during the industrial Revolution. Leonardo's drawing shows a wealth of details, but it depicts the loom without the bearing structure, and shows a view from only one side, making ambiguous the positioning of some of the elements. Accordingly, the process of interpreting the drawing has been complex, and numerous scholars at different times have proposed their interpretations, from Theodore Beck, who at the end of the nineteenth century was the first to publish a study on the loom, on to Luigi Boldetti, who constructed the first model for the Museum during the 1950s. In 2003 Flavio Crippa designed the last operational model, making use of comparisons with other drawings by Leonardo contained in the Codices Forster and the Codices Madrid."

Leggendo il tema di questa tornata, la scelta e' stata x me estremamente facile. Lavorando a Milano, ho subito pensato alle macchine di Leonardo, così' sono andato al Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci, per realizzare la pano nella galleria di Leonardo, che ospita diverse macchine costruite sui sui progetti: in primo piano si vede il primo telaio meccanico mai concepito, come potete leggere sul pannello alla sua base. Qui sotto ho copiato l'intero testo:

"Questo disegno rappresenta il primo telaio meccanico della storia. E' una delle macchine più' complesse mai costruite da Leonardo. L'ordito e' infatti dotato di un sistema di trascinamento automatico, collegato ai licci e alla navetta lanciata automaticamente. Tutte le azioni e i movimenti per realizzare il tessuto sono forniti da un unico albero che può' essere mosso a mano grazie a una manovella. Leonardo trova la soluzione al problema di svolgere l'ordito e avvolgere il tessuto finito mantenendo la necessaria tesatura dei fili e della tela. Introduce la navetta lanciata meccanicamente attraverso un sistema a balestra che apparirà' solo durante la Rivoluzione Industriale. Il disegno di Leonardo e' ricco di dettagli ma raffigura il telaio senza struttura portante e visto da un solo lato, così' d arrendere ambigua la posizione degli elementi. La sua interpretazione e' stata quindi complessa e diversi studiosi hanno proposto nel tempo le loro interpretazioni: da Theodore Beck, che alla fine del XIX secolo pubblica uno studio sul telaio, a Luigi Boldetti che costruisce il primo modello per il Museo negli anni '50. Nel 2003 Flavio Crippa progetta l'ultimo modello, funzionante, servendosi anche di disegni contenuti nei Codici Forster e nei Codici Madrid."
