The Ottawa Locks are the largest single set of locks on the entire Rideau Canal system, providing a lift of 24 m (79 ft.).
When the canal was opened in May, 1832, there were 47 masonry locks that provided navigation from Kingston to Ottawa a distance of 202 kilomtres (125 miles). The locks operate today as they did back in 1832 using only water and human power.
