Visitors Centre – Architectural Heritage

This pano was shot at the Municipal Park in Elche and shows what has become these days the Visitors Centre of the city. This emblematic building by the local architect Antonio Serrano Peral PhD (1907-1968) was build in 1946 as the main construction for the “Regional Exhibition of Industry, Agricultural and Craft” and it is actually the only building still standing up from that event. It was recognised in 1962 as a National Historic-Artistic monument and has therefore become a piece of architectural heritage.

The main characteristic of this building is its shape, round and covered with a dome. Its perimeter is then divided into twelve parts: the entrance and eleven niches whose volumes are visible from the outside.

After the exhibition the building has served several uses, becoming the Archaeological Museum, the White Palm Museum or used as a temporary showroom. It is worth noting here that it was the home to The Lady of Elche (see WWP1206) on a short visit to the city in 1965.

These days it is used as the Visitors Centre, where tourist may get a first impression of the history, traditions, culture, etc. of the city by means of multimedia presentations.
