La Fabrica de Hojalata ( The Tin Factory )

FIRST TIN FACTORY IN SPAIN.

The old factory of San Miguel, known as The Tin Factory, was constructed in Júzcar in 1731, under the reign of King Philip V. The location was selected due to the abundance of wood and water in the Genal River Valley, as both the charcoal and water were essential to the smelter.

Artisans were brought from Germany, since the technique was unknown in Spain. Up to 200 employees came to build the plant, they carried the building materials on camels, being pack animals more suitable than mules or donkeys.

The factory was in operation until the beginning of the 20th Century. The strong competition from Asturias and Basque industries led to the closure of the company.

LA PRIMERA FÁBRICA DE HOJALATA EN ESPAÑA.

La vieja fábrica de San Miguel, conocida como Fábrica de Hojalata. Se instala en Júzcar en el año 1731, bajo el reinado de Felipe V.

Debido a la abundancia en madera y agua del valle del Río Genal, ya que tanto el carbón vegetal como el agua eran elementos indispensables para la fundición.

Para ello, fue necesario traer artesanos de Alemania, ya que la técnica era desconocida en España.

Hasta 200 empleados llegó a tener la fábrica, que trasportaba el material en lomos de camello, al ser animales de carga más adecuados que los mulos o burros.

La fabrica estuvo en funcionamiento hasta principios del siglo XX. La fuerte competencia de los altos hornos del norte de España motivo su quiebra.
