Galmbach
A lost village in the Odenwald

You can't drive to this place, you have to walk. A small parking place is located at N49 32.245 E9 06.27. Two paths lead into the woods from there. After around two kilometers both will reach the former village of Galmbach. In the panorama you can see what is left of it. The sign nearby tells the story of the village.

In short: The village was founded in the year 1443. The first name was Gollenbach, later called Galmbach like the creek at which it was build. In 1828 the village had 18 houses and 149 residents. After some bad harvests around 1800 the poverty-sticken residents sold their houses and land to the House of Leinigen which tried to complete their wildlife park. Nearly all buildings were demolished or decayed and the village Galmbach has ceased to exist. Only one house was left for forest rangers and is used nowadays as a weekend cottage.
