This is where the city of Richmond began. The large concrete cube is all that is visible today of Shockoe Creek. The creek was the last navigable creek on the James River before the falls. A trading post was established here in the 17th Century.
Also in the pano is the James River and Kanawha Canal, construction began in the 18th Century to connect the Atlantic coast to the interior and the Mississippi. The chairman was George Washington.
Later the railroads replaced the canal and the rails were laid on the canal towpaths. Tracks cross this part of town and there is a triple crossing, a track with 2 other bridges over it.
In the 1960s the Interstate highway system came to Richmond, it is the large concrete bridge. In the 1970s the Downtown Expressway (seen here in the narrow ramps overhead) was added and most of the Kanawha Canal was dug up and removed. What we see here is a restoration in close to the right place.
