The Big Sur Highway of California provides the setting for one of the most spectacular marathon courses in the world — 26 miles (42 km) from the village of Big Sur north to the Carmel River.

The most gruelling part of the course is the 560-foot (170 m) climb from near sea level at the Little Sur River to Hurricane Point, in about two miles (3.2 km). Winds can be mild at the river, but blowing a gale at the top, as they were when I took this.

The large rocks around the parking area have been successful in keeping most tourists safely on top, although not many years ago an overzealous Porsche owner managed to slide between the boulders and meet his maker at Hurricane Point.
