Labyrinths date back thousands of years, across many cultures and religions, and were used in the middle ages to simulate the contemplative journey of a pilgramage. The tapestry labyrinth in Grace Cathedral is modeled on the labyrinth set in the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France.

Why has there been a surge of interest in labyrinths? In her book about the labyrinth, Walking a Sacred Path, the Reverend Dr. Lauren Artress, Canon of Grace Cathedral, writes: "We lost our sense of connection to ourselves and to the vast mystery of creation. The web of creation has been thrown out of balance."

Walking a labyrinth helps us to feel a sense of oneness with our community and connects different religions in a common spiritual experience.
