Japanese Garden

The Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historical Park contains numerous formal gardens at the former estate of Mrs. F.F. Thompson. The Japanese garden is one of these varied gardens. The Sonnenberg web site describes the Japanese garden as follows:

"Enter the Japanese Garden through the Torii Gate. A Japanese landscape designer and seven workmen toiled six months to convert a lawn into a miniature mountainous Japanese landscape. Japanese gardens are designed to represent the essence of nature, a different philosophy from the western idea of control over nature. Water flows from East (Purity) to West (Impurity). Each stone and plant is placed in accordance with ancient rules. The model for Sonnenberg's Tea House was a very old tea house in Kyoto, since destroyed by fire. An unusually large bronze Buddha sits in the lotus position, hands held in the gesture of contemplation."

The sound of the waterfalls and birds was recorded on location during the panorama shoot.
