A Midnight Garden Near the Arctic Circle

The panorama is captured at the true midnight, when the sun is at north and has its lowest altitude below the horizon.

At the summer solstice, midsummer, it doesn't get dark at midnight in this northern area. Here in Ultrå, Örnsköldsvik, at latitude N 63° 16' we are just three degrees from the arctic circle, which means that the sun at this time of the year never gets lower than three degrees below the horizon. The twilight transforms into dawn almost before it has started.

The panorama is captured at 1/3s, f=5.0 and ISO 200 which is a typical indoor exposure, hardly any lack of light...

You will find north in the direction of the bright sky behind the trees, and you can see a bay of the Gulf of Bothnia at the opposite direction.

I captured the panorama in a hurry during the traditional Swedish midsummer night party. We spent the night inside the small summer house due to the chilly weather, except for an occasional short swim in the sea. The garden itself is typical for Ultrå, this windy and stony area at the Baltic coast. There is not much soil and the winter is long and dark.

Ultrå is located east of Örnsköldsvik just north of the UNESCO High Coast World Heritage.

Panoramat är fotograferat vid sann midnatt, när solen står i norr och som lägst under horisonten.

Vid sommarsolståndet, midsommar, blir det inte mörkt vid midnatt så här långt norrut. Här, på latitud N 63° 16', är vi bara tre grader från polcirkeln vilket betyder att solen inte sjunker lägre än tre grader under horisonten. Skymningen går över i gryning innan den knappt har börjat.

Panoramat är exponerat på 1/3s, f=5.0, ISO 200 vilket är en typisk exponeringtid vid fotografering inohus. Det är alltså inte speciellt mörkt.

Norr ligger alltså där den ljusa himlen syns bakom träden. I motsatt riktning syns Bottenhavet.

Ultrå ligger öst om Örnsköldsvik, strax norr om världsarvet Höga Kusten (UNESCO:s lista för världsarv).
