Community Spirit

A city is made of ideas and things. Roads, water, sanitation, police, fire and ambulance services, schools, spiritual centres, parks and community centres. The idea that, 'We are all in this together' should create community spirit and pride in where you live and empathy for those less fortunate.

I am Janus IV

I was born Janus I the first winter of COVID. The reason I have two faces is so I can smile at everyone who passes by; vehicles driving west on the Promenade Queen Elizabeth Driveway or pedestrians walking along the sidewalk.

I am approximately 3 meters tall (on a cold day), weigh about 6350 Kg (7 tons) made of pure white Canadian snow collected in my neighbourhood the 'Glebe' in Ottawa.

Living for a few short weeks each year, my spirit is kept alive by removing my heart (snow samples from previous years) placing into a container to be kept safe in the freezer for next year 2025 and the birth of Janus V.

Anishinabe Algonquin Territory

"The land was never legally ceded, or given up to the Crown, through a treaty or other agreement"

The peoples of the Anishinabe Algonquin Nation have lived on this territory for millennia.

Their culture and presence have nurtured and continue to nurture this land and the city.

Since 'Truth and Reconciliation' many names have ben changed to reflect the historical and cultural contributions and to include the Anishinabe Algonquin Nation into the fabric of the City of Ottawa.

Kichi Zibi Mikan formerly the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway (aka the Western Parkway to locals) renamed to the Kichi Zībī Mīkan, which translates to “Great River Road” a name more fitting the scenic drive along the Ottawa River.

JANUS

Janus (January) and the Ritual of the New Year

We can honour the god of transitions by placing a key above the front door, a traditional offering to Janus as he sweeps in the new year.

  • Janus presided over the beginning and ending of conflicts war and peace.
  • God of all beginnings, gates, transitions, time, choices, duality, doorways, passages, and endings.
  • He is usually represented as having one head with two bearded faces back to back, looking in opposite directions.
  • Janus was a good king to the Romans
