RISING
Waters of the Rideau River spring 2021
Opening we see the eastern side of the Rideau Falls a 9 meter drop where the Rideau River falls into the Ottawa River.
It must have been a marvelous experience in 1613 when Samuel de Champlain paddled up the Ottawa River to discover the twin Rideau Falls and a few kilometers up river the Chaudière Falls also known as the Kana:tso or Akikodjiwan Falls.
Zoom out the map and you will see the Gatineau River entering the Ottawa River from the east just across and down river from the Rideau Falls. With tall stands of red and white pine, oak and maple forests and friendly Algonquins the explorers from Europe must have been amazed with the geography and the culture of the indigenous people.
Rideau Falls Park where the photos were shot is located at 50 Sussex Drive on Green Island. The 2.89-hectare park is the site of several commemorations, including the Mackenzie-Papineau Monument, the Commonwealth Air Force Memorial and the National Artillery Monument
In 2015, a statue of Lt Col John McCrae was added to the site of the National Artillery Monument to mark the centennial of the writing of In Flanders Fields. Remember Flanders
