Santa Fe, New Mexico was founded as a Spanish colony in 1610. As one would expect in 410 years, much has changed in the city since those colonial times. One thing in particular has been the way in which homes and buildings are heated. At an altitude of 7,199' home heat is an important consideration. Radiant heating is a popular method used today. It consists of a central boiler, usually fueled by natural gas or electricity, heating a tank of water which is then circulated throughout the house via a network of tubing imbedded in the floors or to baseboard radiators in each room. Early Santa Feans had to rely on wood fires burning in adobe (sun-dried mud) brick fireplaces.
Burro Alley is a short old street a half block off the central plaza downtown where vendors gathered to sell and then deliver loads of firewood carried by their burros. This bronze statue of a loaded burro marks the spot.
