There is a 1/2-mile-long path from a small parking lot just off highway 89, south of Page, Arizona, to the edge of a sheer cliff above the Colorado River. Taking this short hike will reward you with an incredible view of the feature known as The Horseshoe Bend, where an emerald-green Colorado makes a gigantic bend about a thousand feet below as it meanders from nearby Glen Canyon Dam at Page toward the Grand Canyon, which is 75 miles to the south. A couple of caveats are worth mentioning. The trail consists of deep sand most of the way so proper shoes should be considered. There are no safety railings installed at cliff edges so extreme care must be taken. Handy items to pack along include a water bottle, the widest-angle lens in your arsenal (for the panorama challenged), and a flashlight for the return hike if you stay past sunset. Staying until the Sun has completely set is highly recommended by this photographer.
