Beginnings: For thousands of years, people have been drawn to the water of the Pecos River. The river probably provided both food and drink for the hunter-gatherers when they visited the area and used the rock shelters in the area.

I woke early this morning, wanting to photograph the sunrise over the canyon walls at the beginning of a new day. On Friday, I had paddled in a 2-person kayak with a friend from the Pecos River Boat Ramp, just south of the Pecos River High Bridge and chose this area to pitch our tent and spend the night.

The area is beautiful, harsh, and semi-desert with the Pecos River cutting through the stark beauty. The canyon walls tower high above the water, funneling strong winds over the water.

I can only imagine how amazed people were when they discovered this river here and decided to take shelter and paint on the rock walls, never knowing that today's experts would debate over the meanings of the paintings like Leaping Panther and the White Shaman.
