The New Kings Gateway at the University of Aberdeen is for many students the gateway to the beginning of the search for knowledge in the lecture rooms of the New Kings Buildings situated beyond the gate. The dates on the Gateway refer to the founding of the University of Aberdeen, 1494, and to when the Gateway was built, 1912. The University was actually founded on the 10th of February 1495 but the date on the Gateway is a reference to the dating system used in the Middle Ages when the year began on the 25th of March. The coats of arms are of the founder of the University, Bishop Elphinstone and of the University. The national emblem of Scotland and the Scottish Imperial crown are at the top of the Gateway.
