Woody Creek Tavern is now considered a rarity as one Aspen's last hideaways for long-time locals. The regulars, some of whom are classified on the eccentric side, including the late Hunter S. Thompson and a Nitty Gritty Dirt Band member who on this day was lounging with friends on the patio lunch area whittling on a small log with a pocket knife. Local and famous memorabilia adorns the walls and a statuesque Boar welcomes you above the front door.
Atmosphere is a large part of the popularity of the Woody Creek Tavern. The walls talk about regular people, local politics and famous locals all intermingled together within a eclectic array of art. One visit could find you rubbing elbows with your favorite hero, witnessing an event that's printed in tomorrow's news or simply having a quiet dinner.
The strategic location of the Tavern makes it a favorite lunch stop for summer mountain bikers and winter hut skiers. The group at the large table had just finished two nights at the Tenth Mountain
Margy's Hut and the 7.6 mile ski out. Someone had a tumble on the way down on the variable spring snow conditions and needed a side of ice therapy with their lunch.
