North Sea, both friend and enemy of the people of the Netherlands.

Without the North Sea there would be no harbors in Rotterdam, the leading trade harbor in the world. There would be no modern fleet of fishing ships and there would be much less tourism. In this aspect we can speak about the North Sea as bringer of prosperity. But without the North Sea the constant threat to the Netherlands to be flooded is also gone, a very large part of the Netherlands is below sea level and therefore there is a constant need to build big and very expensive construction to keep the Netherlands existing. In this aspect the North Sea is a killer that has proved its brutality many times in history !

North Sea, indeed a water with two faces.
