This is what markets are all about, trading an item for something of equal or greater value. In modern societies we trade money that we earn for the goods and services we purchase in order to survive and thrive. We also trade our time and knowledge in order to earn the money we use in trade.
This is the weekly Sunday morning farmers market in Hollywood, California, one of the larger open air markets in Los Angeles. Just about every neighborhood has a farmers market where local residents go for produce, crafts, and food. A smorgasbord of goods are traded here, which include all kinds of food and fresh baked breads, soap, cosmetics, toys, jewelry, flowers, coffee, you name it and you can find it here. Most of the things are grown or made by local artisans. This is the way they can make a living on their terms while providing goods that can't survive in the modern marketplace of large retail stores and global distribution. Products lovingly made by hand locally. Other area farmers markets include Culver City on Tuesdays, Santa Monica on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and others too numerous to list. There is an open air market every day of the week around Los Angeles. You could get almost everything you need without going to a commercial market here.
