The Wahn Heath may look just like a perfectly natural landscape – it is not! It is a so-called anthropogenic heath habitat. And thus it is the result of Culture! If left alone it would eventually turn back into a forest. Larger bushes would start to overgrow the heath and finally trees would re-colonise the area.
To avoid this, one needs to “manage” the heath. A good method to keep the heath is to let either herds of goats or sheep graze in it. Both will keep young bushes and trees low.
