I hadn't been in here for 41 years—this used to be my stomping ground as a teenager. As a member of the Kandallah Venturer Unit (Scouts) we built a hut over in the Orongorongo Valley in the late '60s. That's where the "5 Mile" leads to.

This pano was taken on a reunion weekend we had back in February. It was a bit like "Who let those guys out of the resthome?" Well we made it over (and back), just 2 hours from the car park.

It was really amazing being back in this southern North Island bush (rainforest) again. Predominantly broadleaf as opposed to the podocarps, palms and tree ferns I'm used to now. The river so different to the tidal mangrove rivers of the Auckland isthmus, but more on that in June's posting.

This is the forest type of my childhood and youth. Over the year I will show you three more manifestations of it.
