Over the ages after the last “Würm” glaciation the River Wutach dug its bed deep into the rocks. So in fact the gorges of the Wutach are relatively young, less than 70.000 years of age. In the middle gorge, where this panorama was taken, the Wutach is still cutting its way through limestone.

The panorama had been taken in the middle of summer when the water level of the Wutach was extremely low. But even at such times the Wutach can be a dangerous, even fierce river. This is demonstrated by the old “Rümmele”-footbridge from 1904 that was destroyed by severe flooding. Some meters upstream you can now securely cross the Wutach via a new footbridge.
