James Naismith born Almonte, Ontario Canada, 06 November 1861

On 21 December 1891 he invented the game of basketball at Springfield College in Springfield Massachusetts USA. Naismith remembered a rock-tossing game he played as a child. He used this childhood memory to create a new game he called “basket ball” originally he wrote 13 rules of play.

FIBA, basketball's governing body, estimates that at least 450 million people worldwide are playing basketball today.
