Castel dell' Ovo is one of the most iconic locations in Naples and a favourite spot with tourists as much as with locals.
Built on a small peninsula, this is where the first Greek colonists founded the ancient city of Parthenope.
According to a Middle Age legend, the Roman poet Virgil had hidden a magic egg in it that would protect the castle and the city for as long as it was not broken, and that's where it's name comes from.
Of course, during the long three millenia spanning story of the city the place has undergone many changes. The look of the fortress as we see it today dates back to the Aragonese domination period, in the XVth century.
