(1796-1870) - Queen's Battery was a Colonial era coastal gun battery established in 1796 on Signal Hill above the harbour entrance to St. John's, NL. It is now part of the Signal Hill National Historic Site. It was eventually restored as a tourist attraction and armed with six display canons. From this vantage point you can easily see why this location was picked. Looking down, you can see Fort Amherst at the harbour entrance. Cape Spear, the most easterly point of land in North America lies on the horizon from the harbour's entrance. A corps of reenactment soldiers take a break from training exercises for the annual Signal Hill Tattoo.
