Havana, Cuba in front of the Capitol building (Capitolio). There are few places left in the world where you will find these homemade bellowed cameras being used as a paper negative camera with a built-in darkroom. This process of recording an image on a piece of photographic printing paper is called a Calotype.The photographer exposes a sheet of paper for the negative, develops it inside the camera. Another step photographs the paper negative to obtain a positive, usually adding a new background. So the develop, stop, fix and wash process happens twice for the final print. Along with the homemade tripod there are bottles of chemicals and a container to wash the prints.
A young lady hawks the sample prints to passerby tourists as the elder photographer adjusts this equipment for the next sitting. Hard work in the heat of a midday tropical sun.
